I've been living in Istanbul for almost 22 years now and it's such a shame that I've never spared the time to see these amazing historical structures till this weekend. A toughtful friend of mine planned our weekend and took me to - in the following order - Eminönü, Yeni camii, Spice market, Rüstem Paşa Mosque, Süleymaniye Mosque, Beyazıd, Nuruosmaniye Mosque, Grand Bazaar, Sultanahmet, Moseic Museum, the Basilica Cistern and Hagia Sophia.Despite the thirty plus celcius degrees in the week, weather in Istanbul this weekend was around 25 C degrees - a thunder storm happened on sunday afternoon, got soaked-in-water wet, totally worth it, better than sunburns.

On Saturday, I had the unique opportunity to hear Rita Golden Gelman speak at the monthly meeting of Professional American Women of Istanbul. I first read Rita's book, Tales of a Female Nomad, when I was 18 years old and attempting to imagine my place in the world. From her story, I found a role model and the inspiration I needed to imagine myself living a life of travel and adventure.

Yerebatin Sarnici or Yerebatin Saray1

After exploring ‘Hagia Sophia’ or ‘Aya Sophia’ or ‘St Sophia’ (=Too many names) we came out to the Sultanahmet Square where the two most beautiful monuments of Istanbul, The Blue Mosque (=Sultanahment Camii) and the Aya Sophia face each other.

As we left the Aya Sophia, we looked in awe at the huge mosque ahead of us.

Numerous advertisements, big signboards and shops-shops-shops... These are first impression I had on the way to the place where we were going to live for 2 weeks. I thought I'd never seen so many people buying and selling whatever will come to one's mind.

The coming several days, of course, big city with its big distances proved whatever we'd heard, seen or read about it: this is Istanbul.

An American in a Turkish Bath

It was midday and I was sitting naked on the edge of a square marble countertop unsure where to direct my gaze. A topless Turkish woman held my left hand as she scrubbed the length of my arm with more vigor than I ever had before. As the two of us locked eyes, she forced a smile below her light mustache, and I wondered what would come next.

On our way into Fethiye, Turkey, our tour guide knew it was market day and that it was a sight not to be missed. The market vendors were happy to be photographed and were very interested in the video work as well. Enjoy more Turkey travel photography (travel photos) from the Turquoise Coast.

For myself as well as our tour group, there was nothing quite like relaxing on board the Gizemha. Once on shore, our group started exploring the ancient islands, littered with Byzantine ruins, mere memories of a once mighty harbour. .....There's a political corollary that goes something like this: You know Barack Obama is crook and a failure and unfit to be president, and I know Barack Obama is a crook and a failure and

to be president, but do a majority of American voters know Barack Obama is a crook and a failure and unfit to be president?"

Linger, Loiter

The pair meets in the Kültürpark, a space filled with palm trees, joggers, idle folks napping on benches, doing Sudoku on benches, staring into space on benches. A grandfather takes his small grandson around the perimeter on a whisper-silent moped so the visitors can only hear their approach by the tiny, growing laughter. A stray cat pauses in the greenery to let a stray dog pass.
